چکیده

Spasticity is one of the major complaints of patients with spinal cord injuries. It has negative effects such as limitations in activities of daily living (ADLs), pain, fatigue, sleep disorders, instability, joint contractures, pressure ulcers, and infection, and decreases gait ability through changes in timing of gait-related muscle contraction and cocontraction [1,2]. Spasticity, also, is a major factor inhibiting functional recovery, as it reduces joint range of motion (ROM), joint contracture, and severe functional impairment of ADLs [3]. Erik et al. emphasized that aggressive treatment of spasticity is required as patients with spasticity have a 1-year treatment cost more than 4 times higher than that of patients without spasticity, indicating that spasticity increases not only functional limitations but also increases the financial burden [4,5]. Therefore, a multidisciplinary approach is being attempted to control spasticity in clinical settings.

Functional effects of botulinum toxin type-A treatment and subsequent stretching of spastic calf muscles: a study in patients with hereditary spastic paraplegia.

OBJECTIVE Although calf muscle spasticity is often treated with botulinum toxin type-A, the effects on balance and gait are ambiguous. Hereditary spastic paraplegia is characterized by progressive spasticity and relatively mild muscle weakness of the lower limbs. It is therefore a good model to evaluate the functional effects of botulinum toxin type-A. DESIGN Explorative pre-post intervention...

Restoration of gait and motor recovery by functional electrical stimulation therapy in persons with stroke.

PURPOSE To evaluate the clinical efficacy of functional electrical stimulation (FES) therapy of the tibialis anterior (TA) muscle on gait restoration and enhancing motor recovery with stroke patients. Dynamic spasticity of plantar flexor muscles in cerebral palsy gait.

OBJECTIVE To quantify dynamic spasticity, i.e. the coupling between muscle-tendon stretch velocity and muscle activity during gait, of the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles in children with spastic cerebral palsy. DESIGN Prospective, cross-sectional study. SUBJECTS Seventeen ambulatory children with cerebral palsy with spastic calf muscles, and 11 matched typically developing children. MET...

Does spasticity contribute to walking dysfunction after stroke?

OBJECTIVES Clinically, it is assumed that spasticity of the calf muscles interferes with walking after stroke. The aim was to examine this assumption by evaluating the contribution of spasticity in the gastrocnemius muscle to walking dysfunction in an ambulant stroke population several months after stroke. METHODS Fourteen stroke patients who were able to walk independently and 15 neurologica...
